King Crab Safari by RIB boat
Welcome to the best activity of your arctic summer vacation in Norway
After the first Red King crab from Russia came to our shores 50 years ago, their population have exploded - and so have king crab fishing in Kirkenes. That`s why Kirkenes has earned the name King Crab City! The crab not only breeds fast, it is massive - the biggest one we caught measuring 1.8 metres from leg to leg. And the king crab legs are filled with delicious meat, each leg bigger than a lobster.
You may have seen fishermen catch alaskan king crab on TV. Now its time to make your Norwegian Deadliest Catch! Only with us, you will be completely safe. But most important of all, you will be full.
We will head out from Kirkenes harbor, and out the fjord toward the Barents sea. With seagulls gawking above, our fisherman guides will take you for a marine sightseeing outside Kirkenes. Sometimes porpoises (arctic dolphins) pops up around the boat, and stick around for a while.
Then we head out for the cages, which are sunk deep to catch the biggest king crabs. You will be hands on deck, and help pull the cages from the depths of the Varanger fjord.
After the catch is secured, the journey will continue to a rustic restaurant by the fjord. Here the King of crabs is served the classic northern Norwegian way. Pure, fresh and heavenly tasty! The portions are generous, so no one will leave the table hungry.
The Snowhotel Kirkenes King Crab Safari is an authentic arctic fishing experience. Every single crab we serve, is caught wild and fresh, with your help, straight from the polar ocean. This unique boat tour has become very popular, and guests visit us both by plane via Oslo, bus via Lapland, Finland and not to mention the Hurtigruten Norway cruise boat. You may even book the tour onboard Hurtigruten. You can go hunting crabs while the boat is in dock in Kirkenes and be back in time for departure.
We have excursions from morning to evening, and the midnight sun will light our way all day. When the dark nights come in August, the Northern lights may appear to complete your nordic adventure.
